Warner Brothers announced that it will be Batman vs. Superman for Man of Steel 2. But how will this differ from Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns?
Spoiler Warning. For those who have yet to see Man of Steel, be advised that there are spoilers in this post.
Last month I wrote about the problems I had with Man of Steel, and one of those problems was with how the movie ended. With so much destruction and carnage leveled upon Metropolis and Smallville, I wondered where they could go next for a sequel? Well Warner Bros. recently announced at Comic Con where they’re going. And it’s Batman vs. Superman in 2015.
Many comic book geeks know all about the legendary Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns. Where an aging Batman takes on a government controlled Superman, and finds a way to go toe to toe with the Man of Steel. I can’t imagine that Superman will be portrayed as a government controlled stooge, and I doubt Batman will be made into a villain for this movie either.
So I’m sure director Zach Snyder and writer David Goyer will find a way to have the two heroes clash in the beginning of the movie, but have a common enemy in which they need to team up with each other to defeat. We saw a similar dynamic play out in Marvel’s The Avengers, where the heroes argued and at times (Iron Man and Thor) even fought one another, before realizing that they needed to come together to win in the end.
With a Flash movie reportedly in development, it seems this Batman vs. Superman movie will be a precursor to the long-awaited Justice League film that Warner Bros. has tried to get off the ground for years. And even though I was disappointed with Man of Steel, I must say that I am intrigued with how Batman vs. Superman will turn out.
Batman has no super powers, and Superman is all-powerful, so the contrast of how they do battle on film will be a sight to see. We know how Batman fights Superman in the Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns, but how will Snyder and Goyer put their own take on how the two heroes battle one another? It’s been reported that Christian Bale will not reprise the Batman role and that Batman will be and older version. So it will be interesting.
