UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey is already conquering MMA, but is she now preparing to conquer Hollywood too?
It’s being reported that UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey not only has accepted a role in the upcoming movie The Expendables 3, but she is also in talks for a role in the high-speed franchise flick Fast and Furious 7.
Although Rousey has trained as a fighter most of her life in Judo, her rise in MMA has happened very quickly. Rousey’s only had seven fights in her MMA career, and after becoming the Strikeforce women’s champion, UFC President Dana White brought her in to the UFC after previously saying that women would never compete in the company.
Rousey’s popularity has increased exponentially since defeating Liz Carmouche at UFC 157, and she’s about to star in The Ultimate Fighter 18, coaching against hated rival Miesha Tate, who Rousey beat in Strikeforce. The two will meet again in the co-main event at UFC 168 in December.
But as good a fighter as Ronda Rousey is, she’s also a very beautiful woman, and many have felt that Hollywood would come calling at some point. But even though it seemed inevitable, I doubt anyone thought it would be this soon. Some have compared Rousey’s marketability to former Strikeforce women’s champion Gina Carano, as she became an action movie star, but only after she stopped fighting.
The fact that these movie roles will most likely be filmed while Rousey is in training for her fight against Miesha Tate, will undoubtedly bring her some criticism that she’s not focusing enough on her fighting. And the criticism will increase if she loses to Tate. But I doubt Dana White is that worried about this, as Rousey increasing her fame in movies only helps the UFC become more mainstream.
Besides everyone loses in MMA at some point. And even if Rousey loses to Tate, which I don’t think she will, it would set up a high-profile re-match which would bring UFC even more money and notoriety. And everyone knows that Rousey can fight, but the real question is can she act?
Rousey is one of the most charismatic fighters in UFC, male or female. So it wouldn’t surprise me at all if she’s a natural at acting. But could this all be too much for Rousey to handle all at once? Can she be a success at fighting and acting at the same time? Something tells me if there’s anyone who can do it, it’s Ronda Rousey.
